Bay Area 'Sit With Us' Rally Planned for Int'l Sex Worker's Day

OAKLAND, Calif. — In honor of International Sex Worker’s Day on June 2, Bay Area Workers Support (BAWS), a peer-to-peer support organization for and by sex workers, will be hosting a rally and march at Oscar Grant Plaza in Downtown Oakland from 12-4 p.m. (PST) to advocate for the health, safety, and protection of sex workers.

Following last year’s focus on the impacts of FOSTA/SESTA, this year’s theme, “Sit With Us,” is geared towards inviting the community and its allies to celebrate and further explore the intersectional issues that affect sex workers, women, people of color, LBTQIA folks, low-income communities, immigrants and more.

According to reps, the event is set to include brunch and coffee vended by Coffee Not Cops and others, speeches from current and former sex workers, an altar to honor those in the community who have since passed, as well as performances by sex worker artists and musicians.

Tabling by community organizations such as St. James Infirmary; Critical Resistance; Public Health Social Justice Collective; Ella Baker Center for Human Rights; The Harm Reduction Coalition; Anti Police-Terror Project; Berkeley Free Clinic; Public Health Awakens; Prisoner Advocacy Network and more will also be present.

The event will be emceed, with programming taking place on stage from 1-3 p.m.
